DVD and Blu-ray Releases: August 4, 2015

Welcome to August, folks. As we look forward to the Halloween season (whose fun is rivaled by the anguish of being stuck behind school buses on the way to and from work each day), there is an expected ramp-up in the amount of weekly releases. Pretty much every week from now until Halloween has at least 10 releases, and that’s lowballing it.

While we have a bunch of classics coming out on various formats over the next couple of months, this week only brings us one in the form of the 7 Movie Jurassic Collection, which contains (you guessed it) 7 movies spanning the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. Don’t fret – be on the lookout in upcoming weeks for a bunch of Hammer films, a Boris Karloff collection, double-feature sets of the Elm Street movies as well as the Friday the 13th series, and a bunch of other items from days of yore.

There are two movies this week that will appeal to our Syfy Channel fans out there: Lake Placid vs. Anaconda and 3-Headed Shark Attack. Honestly, can you really go wrong with any movie Danny Trejo is in?

There’s also the comedic horror Burying the Ex. You may recognize Alexandra Daddario from 2013’s Texas Chainsaw, the (chronologically impossible) “sequel,” as well as Ashley Greene from a highly successful saga involving sparkly vampires.

Again, keep checking back each week. The closer we get to All Hallow’s, the more we will have to tell you about. Pleasant viewing, fiends.

The Nightmare (2015)

Nightmare, The (2015)

Starring:

Maxwell Schneller, Yatoya Toy, Siegfried Peters

Synopsis:

From Rodney Ascher, the director of Room 237, comes a documentary-horror film exploring the phenomenon of ‘Sleep Paralysis’ through the eyes of eight very different people. These people (and a surprisingly large number of others) often find themselves trapped between the sleeping and waking worlds, totally unable to move but aware of their surroundings while being subject to frequently disturbing sights and sounds. A strange element to these visions is that despite the fact that they know nothing of one another (and had never heard of sleep paralysis before it happened to them), many see similar ghostly ‘shadow men.’ This is one of many reasons many people insist this is more than just a sleep disorder.

The Nightmare digs deep into not only the particulars of these eight people’s uncanny experiences (through elaborate, sometimes surreal dramatizations), but it also explores their search to understand what they’ve gone through and how it’s changed their lives.
