Chatting last week with Jake Kennedy in downtown LA during the Screamfest mixer, the filmmaker gave us the skinny on his latest project, the short film Backtrack 2.0, which he intends to serve as a launch for a feature version titled Reversal. Read on for a look!

Kennedy, whose previous efforts include the 2007 feature Days of Darkness and 2009’s Penance, told us of Backtrack 2.0, which stars scream queen Eve Mauro (Wicked Lake, Sorority Party Massacre) and Harold Phillips, “It’s doing the festival circuit at the moment. I have submitted it into all the genre festivals, and am waiting to hear back from most at this point. But it’s been accepted into four so far, and both my lead actors are up for multiple awards.”

Written, directed, produced and edited by Kennedy with sound design and score by Mark Binder and cinematography by Tristan Milani, Backtrack 2.0 follows (according to the official synopsis), ‘A young, innocent woman (who) wakes up to find she has no memory of how she came to be tied up in a dark, damp store room. After escaping and being hunted down by a masked man, her world is literally turned upside down, as she experiences the living hell of what follows – in reverse!”

“I chose Eve as I want her to star in feature version,” Kennedy told us of Mauro’s casting (he previously worked with her on Penance), as well as his feature plans. “I also plan to cast British heavy-weights Vinnie Jones and Malcolm McDowell as the leads in the feature.”

“I shot Backtrack 2.0 at a huge house in Oregon, and that’s where I will be shooting the feature,” continued Kennedy. “The short is more of a teaser for the feature film – a few condensed scenes, themes, action sequences, etc., lifted from the feature (script). The idea is that when you watch the short, you get a very good sense of how the feature will look and feel, especially as I will be using the same location, and the same lead actress. I raised the money for the short film through IndieGoGo.”

Have a look at a trailer for Backtrack 2.0 below, as well as a few exclusive stills and a poster, and stick around for our exclusive online premiere of the short soon!
