Upcoming Book Highlights 80s and 90s VHS Video Cover Art
If there’s anything that instills a sense of nostalgia in 99.9% of horror fans, it’s the video store–namely, the oh so glorious cover art that turned such establishments into heavenly places of cinematic worship. The new book VHS Video Cover Art is a celebration of that nostalgia-inducing art, so listen up.
Curated by artist Thomas Hodge, and with a forward by Mondo’s Justin Ishmael, this collection contains over 240 full-scale, complete video sleeves in the genres of action, comedy, horror, kids, sci-fi, and thriller films. It’s a world of mustached and muscled men, buxom beauties, big explosions, phallic guns, and nightmare-inducing monsters.
“Obscure gems to cult classics in all your favourite genres – from the sublime to the ridiculous,” Hodge told us. “Some are incredible works of art, some insane, some perfectly capture the tone of the films, some capture that tone even better than the films themselves, and some have the most tenuous link imaginable! However, all, as you will see, are amazing and inspiring works of art, which will captivate the imagination along with feelings of excitement and wonder.”
The hardcover VHS Video Cover Art is set for release on May 28th, and while you wait, you can browse a collection of sneak previews below. This book is truly like stepping back in time into your local video store, so if you have a fondness for that bygone era, it’s an absolute must!
