Universal Remaking The Host

The Host being remade ... I'm shocked, as wellDamn you, Gore Verbinski. Damn you. The man behind the U.S. remake of The Ring, which I grant you wasn’t as bad as we had feared, has been attached to produce a redux of another Asian favorite: Bong Joon-Ho’s “>The Host (review). Universal Pictures is behind the remake according to Variety.

Commercial video director Fredrik Bond will be making his feature debut behind the camera on the remake, working from a script by Mark Poirier. The Host, you may recall, follows a family in a small town and how they deal with one another when a monster comes out of the nearby river and grabs their little girl almost literally out of the father’s hands.

Ugh. I don’t want to see this happen, but I guess we have no choice in the matter. I just hope they’re able to translate the odd tonal shifts from the Korean original well enough to make this new American family likable. Verbinski, you may recall, is working on his adaptation of the video game Bioshock for Uni as we speak, but I’m sure he’ll be keeping a close eye on this project as it ramps up.
