Dread Central was lucky enough to visit the set of Miskatonic U: The Resonator last January. It was a unique experience for this journalist, who’s used to set visits being tightly controlled by studio representative. This time, I was able to float around freely, experiencing the production as a fly on the wall.
It’s important to note that set-visits in the age of COVID-19 are unique. I was required to get tested and cleared in advance of my attendence. There is also a COVID Compliance Officer on set, making certain all protocols are maintained. Even though we’ve all be cleared and no one on set has any symptoms, masks are a must; actors are only allowed to take them off for filming.
The practical special FX and monster designs are amazing! The actual “Resonator” is a stunning piece of machinery. The film’s young cast is talented and frenetic, knocking out long scenes in single takes (to the delight of director William Butler). Full Moon Feature’s founder Charles Band was also on set, overseeing the entire operation; he was absolutely beaming over the progress of Miskatonic U: The Resonator!
Synopsis:
Set in the fictional college campus “Miskatonic University” in Arkham, Massachusetts where all sorts of fantastic and unworldly events have been known to unfold in Lovecraft lore, Miskatonic U: The Resonator follows six gifted students as they navigate life after one of them, Crawford Tillinghast, builds a machine known as the “Resonator”. The machine allows one to experience multiple dimensions while navigating the unsavory beasts that dwell within them. But things get complicated when Tillinghast realizes that the prototype of his creation has not only released murderous and deadly creatures into his world, but also has affected his own reality.
Starring acclaimed and internationally beloved cult film actors Michael Pare (Eddie And The Cruisers, The Philadelphia Experiment, Streets Of Fire), Amanda Wyss (A Nightmare On Elm Street, Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Dexter, Charmed) and Jeffrey Byron (Metalstorm, Dungeon Master), and created by horror powerhouse, Charles Band, and writer-director William Butler (Madhouse, Furnace And Demonic Toys 2), the film went into production in Los Angeles in early January. It promises to feature plenty of the sort of gooey practical special make-up effects, along with cameos and performances from many of the original cast members that have long been associated with Gordon and the films from Band’s Empire Pictures universe.
