The Best Horror Movies Streaming Now on Hulu
Last Updated: October 1, 2024
Every year Hulu unleashes its Huluween programming, and horror fans drown in a buffet of delectable titles. This October is no exception, as this month’s list has an overwhelming number of movies and TV shows, seemingly with many of our Halloween watchlists in mind. The streamer is adding a host of newer titles like Carved, Late Night with the Devil, Hold Your Breath, The Beast Within, and Sting. The app is also finally letting us say goodbye to our favorite Staten Island family when What We Do in the Shadows airs the premiere of the sixth and final season. I expect laughs, tears, and wondering how 6 seasons went by so quickly. However, before the vampire squad and their own descendant of Van Helsing bid us farewell, there are 5 other titles that I am excited to check out.
Check out my top picks on Hulu this October.
The Fly (dir. David Cronenberg)
A weird and brilliant scientist accidentally turns himself into a giant fly after one of his experiments backfires. I know Grampa Gooey has done many gross things on screen, but this is the film that upsets me the most. This is probably why I still run toward any David Cronenberg project with my arms wide open today. This remake has everything you could want from an 80s genre film. It has body horror, a retro makeshift lab fit for an aspiring mad scientist, Jeff Goldblum, and Geena Davis. The Fly is possibly the most goopy sci-fi classic I have ever seen in this lifetime. Even if this is not your favorite Cronenberg film, you have probably given it a 30 minute standing ovation in your home once or twice. I say we all give it another one while it’s streaming on Hulu this month.
It’s a Wonderful Knife (dir. Tyler MacIntyre)
A teen saves her town from a serial killer but realizes it only makes things worse. So, she wishes that she was never born and is then transported into a parallel universe where that wish is granted. Usually, I avoid using the C-word until after Halloween, but this is a very deadly Christmas horror movie, and I must stan. I am not the biggest fan of holiday horror, but this one is too fun not to enjoy. Whether you enjoy Michael Kennedy’s high-concept slashers or love chaotic killers wreaking havoc on small towns, this title is a good time. It does not hurt that the cast includes Joel McHale, Chaos King Justin Long, and Horror Queen Katharine Isabelle. Most of us caught It’s A Wonderful Knife on Shudder, so I am happy that we can make people who don’t have that app watch it on Hulu.
Mr. Crocket (dir. Brandon Espy)
A mother tries to get answers after a demonic children’s show host kidnaps her son. This movie is based on Brandon Espy’s short film of the same name and is fresh out of last month’s Fantastic Fest. I recently caught it and thought it was a fun time and it navigated some interesting ideas. It reminded me of a weird mix of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Doctor Who, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and a little bit of the original Are You Afraid Of The Dark?. I also appreciated having Black lead characters who get to focus on supernatural threats instead of catching strays while catering to the people who feed off of racial trauma porn. Mr. Crocket gives us a lot to chew on, and I am so happy Hulu is giving it to subscribers this Halloween season. It is a very cool and quick addition to any horror movie marathon.
Ready or Not (dir. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett)
On her wedding night, a bride discovers her groom has hidden a huge family secret. She is now forced to play a deadly game where her eccentric new in-laws hunt her on the family estate. This was my first Radio Silence movie and is still one of the best times I have ever had in a theater. Not only is Read Or Not funny, bloody, and surprising, but it also has Samara Weaving, Adam Brody, and Andie MacDowell in this ensemble. So, I am happy to see it on Hulu this Halloween season because I want to make a few more people watch it while it is out in the streaming streets again. I highly recommend making it a double feature with Radio Silence’s newest film Abigail, which is currently streaming on Peacock. I know seeing mansions get destroyed as people explode into bloody bits sounds like my kind of carrying on anyway.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (dir. Jim Sharman)
A young couple’s car breaks down, and they seek shelter in the home of Dr. Frank-n-Furter. I do not like musicals, but I will always make time to rewatch The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Not only are the songs catchy, but Tim Curry wearing fishnets is the real reason all generations that came after this movie are the way we are. I also would have cast him as Mr. Body in Clue after watching this important piece of cinema. I cannot force you to do The Time Warp, but you know where I will be if you decide to join me. This film is raunchy, fun, sexual, and has a soundtrack of bops. Is it any wonder it has such a huge fanbase? Come for the 1975 energy, and stay for the dance numbers and camp. It is also a lovely little palette cleanser amid all the nightmare fuel most of us are about to ingest this month.

Hulu’s Huluween is a thing of beauty, as usual. There are so many new titles and old favorites to keep all their subscribers this October. This is a good month for me to rewatch Don’t Say A Word because I appreciated the few genre films Brittany Murphy made during her way too brief time on this planet.
Let me know which horrific things you are getting into on Hulu this month at @misssharai.
