Prolific filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has built quite a genre legacy, with his work spanning four decades and various mediums. So, it is difficult to choose one favorite title from a filmography filled with beautifully tragic tales, heroic anti-heroes, and giant bugs. That is why we decided to focus on a favorite 10 out of what is available to stream now. Check out this del Toro streaming guide, which is guaranteed to take you on an emotional roller coaster.

Blade II (2002)

Where You Can Watch: VOD

In this sequel, human-vampire hybrid Blade allies with the vampire council to combat the Reapers, who feed on vampires. The Blade trilogy does not get enough respect. It is literally a series filled with vampire battles, blood raves, and violence. However, many people still refuse to acknowledge it’s a horror franchise. So, I lived my best life when I realized horror fan Guillermo del Toro directed the sequel. Only a fool would deny a film starring Wesley Snipes, Kris Kristofferson, and Ron Perlman and directed by Guillermo Thee del Toro its rightful place in genre history.

Crimson Peak (2015)

Where You Can Watch: VOD

A woman follows her heart right into the mouth of danger and a haunted home. I am not a big fan of romance, but I love some gothic horror. I also am really here for the aesthetic of this gorgeous film and the performances of Mia Wasikowska and Tom Hiddleston. It’s a pity it is not on Netflix anymore because writing about it makes me want to rewatch it again.

Cronos (1993)

Where You Can Watch: Max

A device that grants eternal life also leaves a path of destruction in its wake. This is one of the few Guillermo del Toro films I have not seen. So, I am happy it is on Max this month where I can finally fix that embarrassing oversight. I am also giddy because this is one of many movies where del Toro and Ron Perlman teamed up, which is always a good time for me.

The Devil’s Backbone (2001)

Where You Can Watch: VOD

A young boy arrives at an orphanage and soon discovers the school is haunted and that there are secrets some people are willing to kill to protect. This is one of my favorite Guillermo del Toro movies. It has ghosts, mysteries, betrayals, and everything else you could ask of a film. The film also has an impressive cast of children actors churning out performances way too advanced for their ages. It is hard to believe this emotional roller coaster is 23 years old.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022)

Where You Can Watch: Netflix

A father’s wish brings a wooden boy to life in Italy. Obviously, del Toro’s take on this old story was one of the most visually stunning movies we saw in 2022. This beloved reimagining of the fairytale even wowed horror scribe Stephen King, who called it “Pure magic.” If you haven’t taken the plunge into this sea of brilliantly designed world of imagination, there’s no time like the present.

Hellboy (2004)

Where You Can Watch: AMC+

A demon defends the human race against the forces of darkness. Of course, Guillermo del Toro was the only person who could bring this beloved Mike Mignola character to the big screen. I did not realize how spoiled we were as kids to see Ron Perlman, Doug Jones, and Selma Blair in this fantastically hellish tale. I am long overdue to revisit this cinematic marvel and will put that AMC+ subscription to use this weekend.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)

Where You Can Watch: Max

Hellboy and the crew must stop a mythical prince leading a rebellion against Earth. We all celebrated when the crew got back together and raised the stakes even higher. I love that the sequel is also available to stream this month because now I have a double feature to watch when I cancel on my friends. Why have one Hellboy movie when you can have two?

Mimic (1997)

Where You Can Watch: VOD

A genetically engineered insect designed to kill roaches carrying a virus turns on the humans they were designed to protect. I loved Mira Sorvino and Charles S. Dutton as a kid. So, I watched this movie, not knowing it would scar me for life. The scene where Sorvino’s character asks a man in a trench coat a question, and he turns around to reveal he is a giant bug sent me right to hell. I plan to send that therapy bill directly to Guillermo del Toro whenever I am strong enough to work through this trauma.

Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

Where You Can Watch: VOD

In the Falangist Spain of 1944, the stepdaughter of an army officer escapes into a world of fantasy. This is arguably the most beloved movie on del Toro’s resume. It is visually stunning, equally touching, and a story too big for any one single genre. So, it is unsurprising that this film continues to stand the test of time. If you are going to rent a movie, this is definitely the one to check out.

The Shape of Water (2017)

Where You Can Watch: VOD

A lonely janitor forms a relationship with an amphibious creature held captive inside a top-secret research facility in the 1960s. This romantic fantasy quickly became an Oscar darling upon its release. It is also possibly Guillermo del Toro’s most divisive title. However, Octavia Spencer, Doug Jones, and Michael Shannon are there, so I will not partake in any slander. You can rent it tonight to find out where you stand on this fishy business.
