5 Disturbing Nicole Kidman Thrillers You Have To See To Believe

Very few things in life are truly certain. However, one thing we can count on is that the next Nicole Kidman thriller is always right around the corner. Not only does Kidman keep a few jobs on her to-do list at all times, but she has also quietly become a genre staple in her own right. Throughout her career, she has appeared in various genre films including To Die For, Birthday Girl, and Practical Magic. She’s also taken her love of mysteries into the miniseries sphere over the last few years. Please check out the addictive Big Little Lies and the nerve-wracking The Undoing on (HBO) Max.
So, it’s no surprise that on the heels of last year’s erotic thriller, Babygirl, Kidman is already back in the genre with Holland, Mimi Cave’s latest film that hits Prime Video later this month. In the film, Kidman plays another suburban housewife whose seemingly perfect life is about to be turned upside down. While many fans eagerly await this new project, I feel it should be a streaming guide problem today.
I put on my nerd hat and pulled five Nicole Kidman movies for you to stream this weekend. So, why not relive some of Kidman’s genre highlights while waiting to see if Holland is your cup of tea next week?
Before I Go to Sleep (dir. Rowan Joffé)
Where You Can Watch: Plex and Prime Video
A woman (Kidman) suffers from anterograde amnesia caused by a traumatic incident. She awakes every morning, unable to form new memories and relying heavily on her video diary. Unfortunately, she soon learns an awful truth that will force her to question everyone she thinks she knows. Colin Firth plays her husband, Ben, and I would love to see them do more psychological thrillers together. Nicole Kidman loves a mystery based on a book, and Before I Go to Sleep was when I realized it. While this is no one’s favorite film on her resume, it does have some fantastic performances worth watching.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer (dir. Yorgos Lanthimos)
Where You Can Watch: Max
A surgeon introduces a troubled young man to his picturesque family, only to have that man force the surgeon to make an unimaginable sacrifice. This twisted and odd title is one of my favorite Yorgos Lanthimos films. And not only because it’s an absurdist psychological thriller and a reimagining of a Greek tragedy. Although, all those words together paint a weird picture that’s very on-brand for me. However, it’s also because Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, and Barry Keoghan are the harbingers of WTF cinema. They combined their powers for The Killing of a Sacred Deer and changed my brain chemistry. If they had made this while I was in theatre school, I might’ve made Iphigenia in Aulis my entire personality.
The Others (dir. Alejandro Amenábar)
Where You Can Watch: AMC+ and Shudder
A woman living with her two photosensitive children becomes convinced ghosts are haunting their home. This unsettling PG-13 horror film takes place in 1945 at the end of the Second World War. So, not only is Nicole Kidman serving in a no-holds-barred horror movie, but she’s doing it in period-piece costumes. This 2001 film imprinted on my brain as a kid. It has remained one of my favorite films from Kidman’s filmography for decades. The Others is a disquieting gem that serves as a reminder that a PG-13 rating is not an excuse for movies not to be scary. Please take advantage of it streaming and revisit this creepy Kidman classic while you still can.
The Stepford Wives (dir. Frank Oz)
Where You Can Watch: Paramount+
A woman’s husband uproots their family and moves them from New York to the Connecticut suburb of Stepford. This lifelong career woman has difficulty accepting the new community of agreeable women and soon discovers a sinister secret. I know this remake is divisive, but I have a soft spot for this sci-fi black comedy with a star-studded cast. Where else can you see Nicole Kidman on screen with Matthew Broderick, Bette Midler, Christopher Walken, and Glenn Close? The Stepford Wives would make a fun double feature with Holland. Do with that information what you will.
Stoker (dir. Park Chan-wook)
Where You Can Watch: VOD
After a girl’s father dies, an uncle she never knew existed moves in with her and her mother. As she gets to know this mysterious stranger, she finds herself drawn into a world of lies. Nicole Kidman made a thriller with the legend Park Chan-wook, so you know I have to talk about it. As a fan of Korean thrillers, I am a stan account for Oldboy, among many other Park films. So, his English-language debut having Nicole Kidman as an unstable mother feels like the gift that keeps on giving. Stoker is another Kidman film that I hold near and dear. This explains why it’s the lone movie on this list only available on VOD. I think it’s so good that I would encourage people to rent it.
Hopefully, this streaming guide will tide you over until the next Nicole Kidman thriller is streaming on a television near you. Or, at the very least, these movies might inspire some chaotic dreams this weekend.
Holland arrives on Prime Video on March 27, 2025.
