Meet The Finalists Of ‘The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula’ Season 4 [Exclusive Interview]

Happy Holidays, Uglies! Believe it or not, the fourth season of The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula is about to drop its grand finale tomorrow. Seems just like yesterday we announced the full season four cast, before casually Instagram-stalking every single one of them. Time flies when you’re being buried alive with bugs, I guess.

Lucky for me I was able to sit down with three of the four finalists who graciously poured me the tea on one of Shudder’s most-watched original series! The last-standing season four monsters have a lot to say about their drag journeys, their time on the show, and even which horror movies you need to watch immediately.

The finalists for season four of The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula include AFAB (Assigned Female At Birth) drag queen Sigourney Beaver and Saint, the winner of The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula: Resurrection. We’ve also got the first South Korean competitor, HoSo Terra Toma, who also recently won the Dread take-over episode. Last but not least we have Dahli—a monstrously talented drag artist and musician hailing from Arizona.

Today we are chatting with Saint, Dahli and HoSo.

Dread Central: Is this the final group you were always expecting?

Saint: Yeah, honestly, when I got there, it was pretty like, as things were happening, there were points when it got shaken up a little bit. But for the most part, when I got here, I was like, “These are the ones.”

Dahli: This top four actually was something that took me a week or so. I was like, “Is this really going to be the top four?” It just happened to be the people I was already connecting with the most. I was like, “I could see it being that.” At the time, it was like, “This is a fantasy,” but then we actually got to it and I was like, “Yes, and we got more than time.”

What was the most difficult moment of the season?

HoSo: Obviously, we’re all artists. We all have egos. Being critiqued is definitely hard. But I will say, being stuck in this routine with a certain amount of people, it’s emotionally exhausting and also very high pressure. Everything. Everything about the situation going on for a certain amount of time, drains you, emotionally exhausts you, physically exhausts you. I guess that being built up, especially [as] you make it further and further into the competition. It changes you definitely.

Dahli: I can’t speak for everybody, but I myself consider myself to be a very introverted kind of person with extroverted features such as drag. It’s easy for me to get emotionally drained, being around people all the time. I have what I call a people meter per day. Once I’m all out of being nice, I’m out of people-ing, I’m like, “I need to go nap now.” I think for me, a lot of the confrontation and stuff was wasted energy and was just exhausting for me at some point or another. Overall, it was a great experience, but I could have dealt without the constant dragging at each other, pun intended

What are some of your favorite horror movies?

Saint: I love the Evil Dead series. Love the reboot. Everything Evil Dead.

HoSo: I will pick, maybe, two. Rosemary’s Baby and The Wailing are two of my favorite horror movies.

Dahli: I’m a Del Toro fan to a fault. I like his approach to horror. I feel like I’m more into the fantastical surrealism vibe that horror can have. I love the gore and the guts, don’t get me wrong. But I love all the ghosties and the floatsies and the things of that nature too.

How has life changed since you were cast on the series?

Saint: I feel like for me personally, it had already changed so much from season three. In season three before, I was a waiter at IHOP. Yeah, I did that for three years and then I started doing drag full-time. I feel like this experience has just solidified my place in the drag community. I feel like people already are very into the work that I did, but this time, they were able to just see more of it, and get a bigger peek into my mind.

Dahli: The big difference, for me personally, is I am a lot happier than I was a couple of months ago. Getting the opportunity to do Resurrection was amazing just because season two was so long ago and I was like, “Everyone’s forgotten about me.” Resurrection caught me at the perfect time that I was in the middle of just changing my drag entirely. It was a good launching point where I was like, “Hi, I’m still here.” Then getting to do season four, it’s absolutely incredible. I feel like this is the experience that I might have robbed myself of on season two. It’s so much nicer this time to know that I didn’t give up or anything. I just kept pushing through and it’s been amazing.

HoSo: Before this, I’ve only done drag in Korea, and Korea is such a small and new scene. New in the sense that the girls started doing drag a lot of the time only very recently. It’s a very show-girl-dominated scene. I have my audience there, but definitely not the kind of audience that expects the kind of drag that I do. Since the show, coming to the States, I’m about to perform in Boston today. I never got to travel for drag, which I’m getting to do now, which is so cool, but I’m getting to see people who are actually coming to see me, and coming to see the type of drag that I do, and amongst performers that get what I do. That is just a completely different experience of doing drag than what I’m used to. It changed everything for me. Obviously, Dahli and Saint, they’ve been doing drag in the States and also they’ve been on the show before, but then, it’s completely, completely different for me.

What’s been the most shocking moment of the season so far?

HoSo: Astrid going home. Definitely, Astrid going home.

Saint: I’d have to say the announcement of the top four. At that point in the competition, it was just anybody’s game. It was so nerve-wracking. Then when they did the reunion beforehand, I just don’t put a good gag above the Boulet. The idea of them chopping somebody at the end could have just been a thing.

Dahli: I think this is the most memorable moment. I would say suffocating under a sheet of latex is pretty memorable. I don’t ever want to do that again, but it did look really cool.

The grand finale for The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula season 4 airs tomorrow, December 21st on Shudder at 12:00AM! Who are you rooting for: HoSo, Dahli, Saint or Sigourney Beaver?
