The Horror Of Dolores Roach

Ten years ago, Aaron Mark wrote a one-woman play called Empanada Loca, inspired by the urban legend of Sweeney Todd, but placed in Washington Heights with a woman recently released from prison. That play became a two-season podcast series titled The Horror Of Dolores Roach. Now, Mark’s story of weed, cannibalism, and delicious empanadas has come to the small screen as a series for Prime Video!

Dolores Roach (Justina Machado) is released from prison after 16 years and returns to a gentrified Washington Heights. She reunites with an old stoner friend, Luis (Alejandro Hernandez), who lets her live and work as a masseuse in the basement under his empanada shop. When the promise of her newfound stability is quickly threatened, “Magic Hands” Dolores is driven to shocking extremes to survive.

We spoke with Mark about the journey of Dolores Roach from stage play to streaming series, bisexuality, gentrification, and more.
