‘The Toxic Avenger Comics’ Writer Matt Bors On Tackling A Cult Horror Icon

Pack those bags, because we’re heading back to Tromaville for a new take on The Toxic Avenger, this time in comic book form! From Ahoy Comics, the founder of The Nib and a political cartoonist Matt Bors, and artist Fred Harper comes the first trade paperback of their The Toxic Avenger revival series.
In the comic series,
Teenager Melvin Junko helps run his parent’s junkyard in Tromaville, a small town in New Jersey where nothing much ever happens—until an ill-timed train derailment of toxic waste transforms Melvin into a hideously deformed creature of superhuman size and strength: the Toxic Avenger! Under a media blackout imposed by Biohazard Solutions (BS) and their PR-spewing Chairwoman Lindsay Flick, Melvin emerges as a hero fighting against BS and the mutated threats that keep popping up around Tromaville. Eventually Melvin uncovers a vast conspiracy more far-reaching than he could have ever imagined. But he knows if everyone is simply made aware of the crisis, they’ll act to stop it. Right?
Before Toxie, Bors was a political cartoonist twice named a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his work on The Nib. Now, he’s tackling something a little nastier, but still just as political! It’s just a little gooier than his previous work.
We spoke with Bors about tackling the iconic Toxie, getting his start in political cartoons, and more!

And that’s not all you can expect to see from Bors and Toxie. Ahoy Comics recently announced a Toxic Mess Summer, which includes the launch of The Toxic Avenger Comics. The new series, led by Bors and Harper, will be illustrated by a different artist and will showcase a different genre. There’s also The Toxic Avenger Pinup Special and Toxie Team-Up, coming this summer! Ahoy is bringing the Toxie before the new film’s premiere on Labor Day Weekend.
The Toxic Avenger trade paperback is out now in bookstores and comic shops!
