In writer and director Shal Ngo‘s new horror film Control Freak, he dives into Vietnamese American identity and intergenerational trauma through something incredibly simple: an itch. This itch in particular is neverending and is on the verge of driving motivational speaker Val (Kelly Marie Tran) into madness. In her attempts to cure what ail her, Val uncovers dark secrets about her past.

Opposite Tran is Miles Robbins, who plays said motivational speaker’s husband, Robbie. On top of being her partner, he also edits and leads video content for her brand. He loves her deeply and wants to start a family. But the harder he tries to love her, the more she seems to wiggle away as she tries to understand what’s happening to her.

We spoke with Ngo and Robbins about writing what you know and the powerful performance by Kelly Marie Tran.

In her review of the film, Dread Central’s Mary Beth McAndrews (who also conducted this interview), wrote:

Control Freak is a welcome change of pace for horror as Ngo examines familiar tropes of mental illness from a unique lens not often seen in the genre. With a focus on Vietnamese folklore and the experience of being Vietnamese in America, Control Freak takes the idea of “the crazy lady” protagonist and crafts something more upsetting than you may expect. Kelly Marie Tran is truly a star and hopefully, this marks the beginning of more horror performances to come for the actor.

Control Freak is streaming now on Hulu.
