Top 9 Heavyweight Horror Match-Ups
King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962)
No creature was responsible for more one-on-one marquee match-ups than the great green one himself, Godzilla. Godzilla took on a wide array of monsters, and we have two of the sexier ones listed here. King Kong vs. Godzilla was a heavyweight battle not eclipsed until Hulk Hogan took on Andre the Giant at Wrestlemania III. The film was produced by Toho Studios and directed by Ishirō Honda with visual F/X by Eiji Tsuburaya. This was also the first time both of the behemoths appeared in color and widescreen format. Godzilla was a 2:1 favorite in Vegas, but Kong was the decisive winner, although he did absorb additional electrical energy from a storm cloud. Check out the full fight below.
Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964)
Two years after the King Kong battle, Godzilla would square off against another of his prime time foes, Mothra. Also directed by Ishirō Honda, Mothra vs. Godzilla was the first internationally co-produced Godzilla film with an American studio as Toho joined forces with American International Pictures to create the film. Four months after the Japanese release of Mothra vs. Godzilla, the picture had its American release under the title of Godzilla vs. The Thing although some members of the American audience expected something a bit more hideous and frightening than the giant fuzzy bug that was Mothra when the film opened in New York City in late 1964.
Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man (1943)
Godzilla’s not the only legendary monster who found himself in a scrap from time to time. The Frankenstein Monster was known to find himself in a tussle now and then as well. Featuring Lon Chaney, Jr., as The Wolf Man and Bela Lugosi as Frankenstein, this was the last Universal Studios production to feature Frankenstein as a major character and was also the first sequel to The Wolf Man. Unfortunately, when the two monsters got into a scrape at the end of the movie, a giant wave came in and washed them both away before we had a clear winner. Check out the fight scene and enjoy!
