Top 10 Organized and Disorganized Serial Killers in Movies
As a society we are fascinated with serial killers and murder; how their minds tick, what sets them off, and why they do what they do. It’s somewhat intriguing and gets our attention. They are everything a horror fan craves in a movie.
So what defines a serial killer anyway? Well, as most of you know, a serial killer is a person who murders three or more people for psychological gratification. Some sources, such as the FBI, disregard the “three or more” criterion and define the term as “a series of two or more murders, committed as separate events, usually, but not always, by one offender acting alone.”
That being said, you could classify just about every killer in the majority of horror movies to be a, quote unquote, serial killer. We’re going to break it down by putting them into two categories. Five of the best favorite organized serial killers, and five of the best disorganized serial killers in movies.
The organized serial killer is usually highly intelligent and well organized to the point of being meticulous. Every detail of the crime is planned out well in advance, and the killer takes every precaution to make sure they leave no incriminating evidence behind.
The disorganized serial killer usually has a low IQ and is extremely antisocial. They rarely plan out the deaths of their victims in any way. Most often, the people they kill just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. This type of serial killer appears to strike at random whenever an opportunity arises.
Top five organized killers:
Se7en – John Doe (Kevin Spacey)
Kevin Spacy in all his glory, but not till the end of this movie really. You got to know this killer by his deeds, and what deeds they were. The seven deadly sins of all of us. I don’t know about you, but this movie is one of the reasons I second guess myself when I’m in the mood to sin.
Psycho – Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins)
We couldn’t leave Norman out of this top 5. Classic serial killer who still “lives” with his mother. Yes, please! Anthony Perkins was excellent in this role.
Saw – Jigsaw (Tobin Bell)
“Most people are so ungrateful to be alive, but not you, not anymore. Game over!” Wow, right? It’s sort of hard to classify Jigsaw as a serial killer when in this movie he never actually killed anyone. That being said, he still planned the entire fiasco of madness, and therefore I’m putting him in this top five for that reason.
Dressed to Kill – The Blonde Lady

This was a brilliantly done movie, and the killer in this was such a surprise. Talk about issues! If you haven’t seen this movie, you must!
Silence of The Lambs – Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins)
We all agree that Hannibal Lecter is the best serial killer in any movie ever done. He is brilliant and cunning and a force to be reckoned with. There will never be any killer that is this as memorable and creepy as Dr. Lecter.
Top 5 Disorganized Serial Killers:
Kalifornia – (1993) Early Grayce (Brad Pitt)

Brad Pitt playing an murderous redneck? Hell, yes! Drive cross country with someone you don’t know just so your sick ass can cause some mayhem? Yes, please!
Natural Born Killers – Mickey and Mallory Knox (Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis)
From the very first scene of this movie, you absolutely know that these two are a couple of whack jobs that just want to kill people for no damn reason except to have fun doing it. These two are some sick fucks, and it’s pretty rare to have a couple who kill together.
House of 1000 Corpses – The entire family
This family is just waiting for whoever to show up so they can unleash their sick and demented fun on their victims. They don’t just kill… they play with their victims first. This is one family reunion I don’t want to attend.
The Hitcher – John Ryder (Rutger Hauer)

Your mama always warned you not to pick up hitchhikers, and this movie made you listen to her for once. I guarantee if you’ve seen this movie, you’ve never picked up a hitchhiker since.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre – Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen)

Good lord! If you don’t agree with me on this one, I don’t know what to say. This scene in itself shows the pure sickness of the killer. It’s disgusting and terrifying, but somehow you can’t stop watching even though you know you should.
