iZombie: Recap of Episode 1.08 – Dead Air; First Look at Episode 1.09 – Patriot Brains

Last night’s “iZombie” Episode 1.08, “Dead Air,” opens with what appears to be a sexual tryst between Liv and Lowell. And, while this little sequence is certainly a bit risque, Liv isn’t actually in the act of lovemaking… she’s receiving a nice foot massage. However, these two are in bed, and while the foot massage is the focus right now, it looks as though Liv and Lowell have indeed done the dirty.

It’s an interesting opener as the show has followed a strict formula thus far: The opening sequence is always the intro to the murder case of interest. But fear not; we move right into that.

While listening to a radio talk show in her car, Liv hears a woman caller who claims she intends on killing the woman who is having an affair with her husband. Is this the segue to the “Dead Air” mystery? We’ll know soon enough, but first we see Liv’s lawyer roommate, Peyton, seeing to it that Major – who was arrested last week for breaking into a car – is released from jail. Ravi, Major’s new roomie, is there also.  Major comes rolling out looking absolutely brutalized. It turns out law enforcement is as shady as the cliches indicate.

Jerome’s and Eddie’s remains have been found, as Ravi tells Major. It looks like the police are attempting to cover things up, blaming the deaths on the same kidnapping couple that were killed last week. But Major knows that is major bullshit: It was The Candyman who killed Major’s friends.

We jump over to the morgue, where Liv is working on a body and still listening to the airwaves, where the scorned woman continues rattling on about killing her husband’s mistress. But interestingly enough, it’s the radio DJ who finds herself dead… and it appears to be the DJ who was the woman having an affair with the caller’s husband. Oh, how things get tricky on “iZombie”!

The hunt is on for the mysterious and furious caller, and it becomes evident that whoever killed the on-air personality had access to the radio station. We’ll soon find out more details as Liv gets into feasting on the woman’s brains.

It turns out Sasha, the victim, had a rivalry with another radio personality. One who went out of his way to make her life and reputation hell. So we’re off to visit Chuck and see if a few clues present themselves. According to Chuck their feud was all for show, but Liv suddenly has a vision, and it seems that Chuck’s wife realized Sasha may have been fooling around with Chuck. Suddenly we’ve got a very viable option on the table, although as we all know, the obvious answer rarely proves to be the conclusive deal sealer.

We get a quick look at Major as he continues his investigation. But it’s taking a toll on him. He’s losing himself, and it’s now causing a wedge between him and his new love. This could potentially re-open a door for Liv and Major’s once burning relationship. We’ll see where it heads, but it appears to be aimed in a favorable direction for Liv… though that could cause problems given her growing attraction to Lowell.

Blaine and the police chief (who’s also undead, remember) meet to discuss Blaine’s recklessness. The chief is tired of covering for the lunatic zombie, but Blaine is in control, and that is quite obvious. It looks as though the chief has little option but to continue playing by Blaine’s rules, which means more bodies going missing and more families in distress.

We cut away to yet another vision. Liv sees a bit of a battle between Sasha and her longtime assistant. Her assistant is brought in for questioning, and she plays it cool. But we’ve seen people in the hot seat play coy on more than a single occasion. This is certainly a person of interest.

Liv then pays Major a visit. Major dumps all of his knowledge on her. He tells her he found a brain in Julien Dupont’s car. And he all but tells her he knows something out of this world is happening. His decision to confide in her is a sign that there’s still a very real love that exists there, and as cool a cat as Lowell is, it’s impossible not to pull for Major. We want to see these two back together again because, quite frankly, they make an awesome couple.

More visions hit Liv, and a clear clue scrolls across her mind’s eye. Someone named Sam may have played a role in Sasha’s death, directly or indirectly. But we’ll be forced to wait a few minutes to follow up on that lead.

Ravi has spent the entire episode attempting to get Liv to hook him up with Peyton after sharing a “moment” with her while they rescued Major from jail. But Liv is leery to do so. She’s afraid that not only may Peyton be out of his league, but she may break his heart. It’s wearing on Ravi, which is leading to a bit of anger directed in Liv’s direction. To be fair, the man deserves a chance; he’s awfully charming, and that sense of humor is bound to win over a lady or two.

A new clue surfaces. The woman who is suspected of killing Sasha, as it turns out, recently recorded a radio commercial, which means Clive and Liv can track her down through the studio. This woman, Kaley, is an assistant at the station whom we met earlier in the episode. Clive and Liv pay Kaley a visit at home. It turns out Sam, whom Liv saw in a previous vision, is actually Kaley’s husband. And that’s a wrap… or is it?

Kaley provides some interesting information about Jane, Sasha’s on-air partner. It looks like Jane is the one with the true motive to kill Sasha: Jane wanted her position on the mic, and apparently she was more than willing to murder to get it. The boys in blue (and Liv) arrive at the station, and it’s over for Jane. She all but confesses on air as she’s placed in handcuffs, and another case comes to close.

The episode reaches its conclusion in an interesting fashion. Ravi is calling Peyton to pursue the attraction he isn’t willing to deny. And Peyton doesn’t look remotely near opposed to the idea of sharing conversation with the suave doc. She may just have a fine catch on her hook, and the same can be said of Ravi. These two seem to be meant for each other. But the twists don’t end right there; Ravi is scratched by his zombie mouse, and as the final moment of the episode arrives, we – and Liv – learn that Lowell’s been getting his meals from Blaine, and she’s just taken a bite of poor Jerome’s brains. The plot thickens!
