After what seems like ages, director Oleg Stepchenko’s fantasy/horror flick Forbidden Empire is finally seeing the proverbial light of day. In addition to heading to a theater near you, the film will make its long-awaited debut on VOD. As a wise man once said, better late than never.

According to Quiet Earth, the film first popped up on radars back in 2008. Seven years later, Entertainment One is finally giving the retelling of the 1967 film Viy its due.

Check out the synopsis below:

Early 18th century. Cartographer Jonathan Green undertakes a scientific voyage from Europe to the East. Having passed through Transylvania and crossed the Carpathian Mountains, he finds himself in a small village lost in impassable woods. Nothing but chance and heavy fog could bring him to this cursed place. People who live here do not resemble any other people which the traveler saw before that. The villagers, having dug a deep moat to defend themselves from the rest of the world, share a naive belief that they could save themselves from evil, failing to understand that evil has made its nest in their souls and is waiting for an opportunity to gush out upon the world.

Forbidden Empire, which stars Jason Flemyng (Mirrors, Stonehearst Asylum), hits VOD and select theaters on May 22. The trailer awaits your undivided attention.
