The longest running independent movie studio in North America, Troma Entertainment’s extensive library has seen commercial success and critical appreciation for over 40 years. FilmRise is acquiring rights for hit titles such as Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s debut feature, Cannibal: The Musical, Lloyd Kaufman’s four-part Toxic Avenger saga and cult favorite Surf Nazis Must Die. Other titles include Kaufman’s crowd-pleasing horror-comedy Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead; Brian De Palma’s The Wedding Party, starring Robert De Niro; Paul Walker’s screen debut, Monster in the Closet; and Kaufman’s Tromeo and Juliet, penned by Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn. In addition to over 300 titles from Troma’s celebrated catalogue, FilmRise will also distribute the studio’s new releases.
Founded by Kaufman and Michael Herz, Troma Entertainment has produced, acquired and distributed more than 1000 feature films from all regions of the world and across all genres. With a focus on inventive and alternative filmmaking, Troma has helped launch the careers of Hayao Miyazaki, Vincent D’Onofrio, Oliver Stone, Eli Roth and Samuel L. Jackson, and Troma’s films have been featured in retrospectives by the American Cinematheque, Cinemathèque Français, the British Film Institute and the American Film Institute.
“We’re beyond thrilled about our partnership with such a groundbreaking company,” said FilmRise CEO Danny Fisher. “Troma has one of the most eclectic and valuable libraries out there, and we’re proud to not only continue their mission of supporting innovative and independent filmmaking, but also to amplify their political and social messages on a massive scale to an even larger audience.”
“For four decades, we have been disrupting media with a unique vision and hideously deformed creatures of super human size and strength, plus an ever-expanding library of cult and commercial favorites,” said Lloyd Kaufman, president of Troma Entertainment. “We are delighted that FilmRise will be bringing these one-of-a-kind films to our dedicated fans, as well as Tromatizing a whole new audience with these genre-defying brand name movies.”
