Hellgate Adds Toll Booths?
Along with the news that Hellgate: London is expected to show up for your Windows PC this summer, comes some less exciting news. Shacknews reported on Tuesday that Hellgate: London is going to charge for its multiplayer component monthly, as games such as World of Warcraft do.
This would be a big disappointment, as while they aren’t lying to say the games multiplayer greatly resembles that of massively multiplayer games that charge a monthly subscription, it more closely resembles Guild Wars and Diablo 2 … games that both had huge free multiplayer options.
Single player would be unaffected by this of course, and I have heard people say that Diablo 2’s multiplayer would have been worth paying for, but that doesn’t change that this news is basically telling you to pay for something that everyone was expecting for free.
Publishers EA have since contacted Shacknews to tell them that the pricing and payment model have not been decided on yet, which is pretty much confirmation that they are considering a monthly subscription cost. We’ll follow this one to see what happens, as it was one of the horror games at E3 that turned the most heads last year.
