Charlie Hunnam Opens Up About Problem with Pacific Rim; Hopes Sequel Will Fix It

From what we’ve been told, Guillermo del Toro hopes to begin shooting Pacific Rim 2 this November, which is tentatively titled Maelstrom. He says that plenty of wild action is headed our way, though returning star Charlie Hunnam may have an issue with that. Read on.

In a fairly unusual interview over on Entertainment Weekly, Hunnam admits that he felt Pacific Rim was too spectacle-driven, with not enough focus on story and/or characters. It’s an interesting gripe for the actor to have, as many felt he was the movie’s dullest aspect.

I think world creation and monster creation and all of that stuff is exciting as a secondary element of storytelling,” Hunnam told the outlet. “When it becomes more important than storytelling, I get very nervous, and you sort of lose me a little bit. Although we tried very hard on Pacific Rim to marry those two elements, I do feel like ultimately it got weighed heavier on the side of spectacle than storytelling.”

I hope that we are able to remedy that a little bit going into the second,” he continued. “Not to say I wasn’t proud of the film. I really liked it, and I felt like it delivered exactly what it was supposed to. But I do feel like we could have maybe plumbed the depths of the character and the storytelling a little bit more.”

As strange as it is to hear these things coming from an actor about a movie he was the star of, Hunnam certainly has a point. Modern Hollywood action films tend to leave storytelling and character development at the door, so here’s hoping Pacific Rim 2 fixes some of those problems.

The sequel is set for release on August 4, 2017.
