Monster Hunt Is Now the Highest Grossing Chinese Film Ever

The fantasy adventure Monster Hunt is now the highest grossing Chinese film of all time, earning a whopping $225 million on a budget of around $40-$56 million after just two weeks of release.

The film is a mixture of CGI animation and live action and tells the story of a villager named Tianyin who gives birth to a monster named Huba, who is the heir to the Monster Kingdom. Too bad that the humans of the world want to kill Huba to put an end to monsters once and for all.

Director Raman Hui is known for his prolific work with Dreamworks Animation and will no doubt become a heavyweight in Chinese cinema.

Over the past several years, China has become more and more of a key market for Hollywood movies, with films like Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jurassic World and Transformers: Age of Extinction all grossing over $200 million there. Some films are even edited to appeal more to a Chinese audience. Seeing a native film perform so well over there is certainly a welcome sign that they have a blossoming film industry of their own.

A US release date for Monster Hunt has yet to be set, and the film may just be a bit too quirky for Western audiences (one joke apparently involves breastfeeding). But hey, at least China made something that is decidedly their own rather than conforming it to Western standards.
