Gamescom 2015: Killer Instinct Season 3 Kicks Off With Battletoads

When Microsoft first announced Killer Instinct as a free-to-play Xbox One exclusive with a seasonal purchase model, many people’s reaction was, “how the hell is that gonna work?” While mechanically sound, the game languished for some time from a sparse roster. Even now, two years after release, the 18 character roster falls short of the now 28 kombatants of Mortal Kombat X. Progress has been slow, with an average release of 9 characters a years. While I am all for continued support of content, it is hard to stay interested in a game for that long, much less get excited for every new release.

That is, unless the new release is a radical toad with attitude. Check it out:

Oh… oh God. It is so glorious. KI is no stranger to badass characters that push the limits of design, but none of them so far have been mutant combat amphibians who turn into wrecking balls. While all of you were playing Mario and dress up with your sister, I was cutting my teeth in the “Turbo Tunnel”. Oh yeah, that’s right, you just realized that you’re talking to a real man.

Kicking off Season Three with a spiked boot to the ass, Rash from Battletoads joins the KI lineup. Releasing sometime in March 2016, he will herald the end of new fighting games forever. I mean, what’s the point? You will never match the ‘tude of the toad. Fans of the game can look forward to pulling off some seriously tubular combos, while people who aren’t fans can look forward to becoming fans of the game.

But wait, there’s more! Anyone who has bought any Killer Instinct content can download the character right now and play the Beta version for the next month. If you have purchased any characters in the past, pick your jaw up off the floor and download this rad tad’ goin’ mad now. Full release is a ways off, but the hype is real. I’m stoked to see my favorite of the toads back in action. He’s got so much style, he wears sunglasses without pants. Try to wrap your head around just how awesome that is, and maybe you’ll be ready by March.
