Charlotte GainsbourgCannes 2009 has come to an end, and we’re happy to report that a few horror offerings won awards, most notably Antichrist‘s Charlotte Gainsborough, who was dubbed Best Actress at the fest.

The actress has called her role as a grieving mother “the strongest, most painful, and most exciting experience of my whole life.” The mainstream news outlets have been full of stories regarding Lars von Trier’s film’s explicit scenes of physical abuse and torture, but that wasn’t enough to scare off IFC, who picked up Antichrist‘s distribution rights just a few days after its screening.

Other genre related films with strong Cannes 2009 showings include Park Chan-wook’s Thirst, which shared the festival’s jury prize (i.e., third place) with teen drama Fish Tank, and the Filipino psychological thriller Kinatay, for which Brillante Mendoza snagged the Best Director award.
