Outcast Begins Production and Adds New Cast Members

Principal photography has begun in South Carolina on Robert Kirkman’s upcoming exorcism drama “Outcast,” produced for Cinemax by FOX International Studios (FIS), and we also have six new cast members to share.

David Denman (13 Hours), Melinda McGraw (“The X Files,” “Mad Men”), Grace Zabriskie (“The Killing”), Catherine Dent (“The Shield,” “Astronaut Wives Club”), Brent Spiner (“Star Trek: Next Generation”), and Lee Tergesen (“The Americans,” “The Get Down”) have been cast opposite Patrick Fugit, Wrenn Schmidt, Philip Glenister, and Reg E. Cathey.

“Outcast,” the TV adaptation of Kirkman/Skybound’s comic book by the same name, was developed by FIS and was picked up to series by Cinemax in the U.S. and by FOX International Channels (FIC) outside the US earlier this year. The series follows Kyle Barnes (Fugit), a young man who has been plagued by possession since he was a child. Now an adult, he embarks on a journey to find answers, but what he uncovers could change life on Earth as we know it.

Here are the details of the newly announced characters:

  • Married to Kyle Barnes’ sister, Megan, Mark Holter (Denman) is a husband and father first – but a by-the-book small town cop a close second. He loves his wife deeply, but his innate sense of justice is challenged by her loyalty to Kyle, whom Mark can’t forgive for his past transgressions.
  • Janet Anderson (Dent) is the ex-wife of Reverend Anderson. Their marriage was shattered by Anderson’s obsession with battling the forces of darkness, but she still can’t help but feel affection and sympathy for the man she once loved, the father of her child.
  • Single mother Patricia MacCready (McGraw) is a devout member of Rome’s Light of God Baptist Church and a regular at Reverend Anderson’s church teas.
  • Mildred (Zabriskie) is one of the old guard of parishioners at Anderson’s church. Full of spit and vinegar, Mildred lives alone and says what’s on her mind.
  • Blake Morrow (Tergesen) is a former police officer on Death Row for murdering his partner’s wife.
  • The man who calls himself Sidney (Spiner) first appears in Rome soon after Kyle and Reverend Anderson successfully exorcise little Joshua Austin. But Sidney’s dapper appearance and smiling demeanor hide a malevolence.

“Outcast” is expected to premiere day & date on Cinemax in the U.S. and across FIC’s FOX-branded entertainment channels in over 125 countries worldwide in 2016.  The series is executive produced by Chris Black, Robert Kirkman, David Alpert, Sharon Tal Yguado, and Sue Naegle.

Development Hell: The Unmade Horror Movie Podcast
Cary Fukanaga's IT (with Emily Gagne)
The Development Hell podcast revisits their episode on Cary Fukunaga’s (TRUE DETECTIVE) unmade adaptation of Stephen King’s IT! With guest Emily Gagne, this episode uncovered a very different (and darker) vision of Stephen King’s seminal work of terror. Emily Gagne is a filmmaker, podcaster and writer. She curates FINAL GIRL FASHION on Instagram, an account showcasing the killer outfits of women in horror. Emily also co-hosts the podcasts We Really Like Her! And What About Meryll? Together they cover the IT miniseries, both feature films and the classic Stephen King novel which started it all. That’s when they dive into Cary Fukunaga’s and Chase Palmer's 2014 draft of the IT adaptation which was ultimately cancelled. Furthermore, they explore the nitty-gritty differences between the Andy Muschietti vision of Derry and how it compares to the Fukanga/Chase draft.Emily and Josh also speculate wildly about why Warner Brothers jumped ship after developing IT with Fukanga for nearly five years. If you are a fan of Stephen King’s IT and Pennywise the Dancing Clown? If so, you won't want to miss this episode. Do you think the recent films did the book justice? Let us know on social media! You’ll float too … but only if you subscribe to the pod on Apple, Spotify or anywhere you get your podcasts! Development Hell is also a proud member of the Dread Podcast Network. For every horror title to hit V.O.D, countless others end up D.O.A!
