Resident Evil 2 Fan Project Shut Down In light Of Resident Evil 2 Remake

The people over at InvaderGames announced earlier today that they would be canning their independent Resident Evil 2 Reborn project. In light of Capcom’s recent announcement that it would be developing Resident Evil 2 Remake, Capcom officially requested that InvaderGames stop production on the project. Man, those corporate overlords really have it in for the little guy, don’t they!

Well, no, not really. According to InvaderGames, this might actually lead to a happy ending for everyone. From the Facebook post, “Capcom called us up in advance of the announcement and asked us if we would mind stopping the project as they had longer term plans for a Resident Evil 2 Remake. They have invited us to a meeting to discuss further ideas.” They further promise that, “the work done until now will be useful for future projects” and “we hope to focus soon on the biggest professional chance that we could get.

If that means what I think it means, this could be a Cinderella story for the burgeoning devs. In their own words, “it’s very rare to find such a leader company in the industry so much open minded and sensitive to the work of a growing studio like ours.” Going from hopeful fans working on a passion project to actually working on the real thing with Capcom is a nigh unheard of opportunity. Generally, these things just get hit with a cease and desist copyright claim, regardless of the realistic development status of a remake or future title.

I didn’t think I could get more excited for the upcoming Resident Evil 2 Remake, but this little bit of sunshine just did that. It’s awesome to see the devs not only care so much about the project, but also the fans that kept the game alive for so long. It’s a long way off, but I’m incredibly excited to see RE2 be given the Resident Evil complete remake treatment, a la the GameCube version.

How do you guys feel about this story? It’s always sad to see a promising fan project shut down, and Capcom’s Resident Evil track record has been spotty of late. Is this a tragic loss, or a sign that this might just be a return to form? Let me know what you think in the comments!
