Borderlands Film Coming From Lionsgate
Long gone are the days when Lionsgate was primarily known for distributing films in low-budget straight to video territory. They house that Jigsaw built announced that they’ll be turning Gearbox’s sci-fi FPS series Borderlands into a film.
The news came from Lionsgate’s official website today, as they announced that they’ve reached an agreement with publisher Take-Two Interactive. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger had the following to say:
“We believe that we’ve brought together the right partners, the ideal creative team and the perfect property to launch a new motion picture tent-pole for a global audience. Part of our strategy in entering the game space under Peter Levin has been to source new brands with built-in audiences that will translate into great films and television shows. The Borderlands games don’t pull any punches, and we’ll make the movie with the same in-your-face attitude that has made the series a blockbuster mega-franchise.”
Gearbox will also be heavily involved to ensure that the film remains true to their games, as their president Randy Pitchford explained:
“Creating, developing and continuing to build the Borderlands franchise at Gearbox Software has been an incredible ride where the most powerful fuel to our engine has been the astonishing outpouring of love and devotion from the fans. It is the passion of the fans driving the growing success of Borderlands that brought what I believe to be the best team of film producers, marketing and distribution experts in the world together to deliver the exciting story and unique characters of Borderlands to the big screen.”
Brothers Avi and Ari Arad will produce, and there’s no word on a release date yet.
This isn’t the only big new film adaptation coming from Lionsgate, they also recently announced a live-action Naruto film. With The Hunger Games and The Expendables now loosing steam, it’s really no wonder that they’re looking to create new franchises.
We’ll keep you up to date on the Borderlands film as it unfolds. Let’s just hope that it won’t be another “stinking flesh bag” (yes that was from the first game) like most other game to film adaptations.
