DVD and Blu-ray Releases: September 1, 2015

Well, folks, I’m certain that most of you have already heard the terrible news about Wes Craven’s passing. When I was a little kid and first wanted to start watching horror movies, my mother sat me down to watch the original A Nightmare On Elm Street. From that moment I was hooked. In honor of that shining moment of my youth, I sadly yet proudly dedicate this week’s DVD and Blu-ray release list to Mr. Wes Craven – a true visionary who reinvented a genre. Rest in peace.

Those of you who were expecting Dead Retribution to be released this week will have to wait. It has been pushed back to October 20th. Be sure to keep checking back here for more information.

Pretty much all of the 26 releases listed are from 2013-2015 with the exception of our collections list. This week brings the Christopher Lee Collection, containing three movies featuring Mr. Lee with the likes of Peter Cushing and Klaus Kinski. Also arriving to your local shelves this week is the Monster Collection, featuring 16 movies that have been in other collections and will probably end up in at least one other collection some time before the end of the world. For those of you who like a more lighthearted approach to your scares, check out the Abbott and Costello Meet the Monsters Collection.

Fans of Alien will be psyched to know that Dark Star: H.R. Giger’s World, a documentary about the stunningly talented (and controversial) artist, will be available for purchase this week. If you’ve ever wanted to take a stroll through the late artist’s darkly renowned brain, now is your chance.

On a side note, the Amnesiac DVD will be dropping this week, but we won’t be seeing its Blu-ray release until October 6th. Stay tuned here each week for more details on this and all other new releases.

Pleasant viewing, fellow fiends.

The Harvest (2015)

Harvest, The (2015)

Samantha Morton, Michael Shannon

Synopsis:

In his first film in nearly 15 years, the director of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer harks back to the depravity that made his 1986 debut a horror milestone. Desperately lonely, the preteen sets out to befriend a neighboring deathly ill, bed-ridden boy (Charlie Tahan), despite the outright disapproval of his mother (Samantha Morton). Maryann’s persistence pays off, however, and during a series of secret visits she gradually uncovers some seriously sinister goings-on in the house… Morton as the boy’s overprotective surgeon mom is the stuff of great screen villainy—at once utterly monstrous and tragically desperate—so much so that she makes even frequent heavy Michael Shannon, as the more subdued dad, pale in comparison.
