Event Report – The 8th Annual San Antonio Horrific Film Festival

The 8th annual San Antonio Horrific Film Festival is now in the books. For the past eight years, promoter George Ortiz has put together the festival to showcase independent horror, but with another motive in mind. A portion of the proceeds from the festival go to the Wounded Warrior Project, a non-profit designed to help injured soldiers and their families.

This year, the festival came from the Korova Club in San Antonio and featured bands and a cosplay contest as well as celebrity guests. Featured acts included the Frantic Flintstones, Mariachis Del Inferno, and Las Cruces Dusk. Celebrity guests this year were Gil Gerard (“Buck Rogers”); Arch Hall Jr. (The Sadist); Vernon Wells (The Road Warrior, Commando); Chris Element (Ink Masters); Authors Veronica Stich and Scott A. Johnson; and Apache Ramos, Michael Beck and David Harris from The Warriors. Also included in the festivities was Barbara Leigh (pictured), the original model for Vampirella.

Films came from all over the United States, with entries from as far as California and New York, though the majority were testament to Texas’ vibrant independent film scene. Audiences voted, as did a panel of judges, to crown this year’s winners and chainsaw award recipients. The winners were:

  • Best Feature: Dorchester’s Revenge
  • Best Short: ‘Til Death
  • Best Actor: James Christopher, Quad-X: The Porn Movie Massacre
  • Best producer: William Instone, Go to Sleep
  • Best Director: Jacob Grimm, Dreadtime Stories
  • Johnson Family Memorial Writer’s Award: The Send off
  • Best SFX: Lamb Feed
  • Best Actress: Andrea Dettling, Quad-X: The Porn Movie Massacre
  • Audience choice award: Go to Sleep
  • Horror Hall of Fame: Barbara Leigh – Vampirella

Other films featured include Disengaged, Human Resources, Among the Dead, Tickle, Flag Day, I Owe You, Werebitch Vs. Gigantits, and PMS: Pre-Teen Monster Syndrome.

Ortiz and company are already gearing up for the next San Antonio Horrific Film Festival, and will announce when to submit films soon. When they do, you can bed Dread Central will announce the deadlines.

Then Terry HAD to talk to them briefly about one of the wild narrative shifts in Significant Other (Please go watch; it's on Paramount+).
