King Kong to Battle Godzilla at Warner Bros.

After Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla made a ton of cash at the box office, many fans wondered whom the giant lizard would face in his future cinematic endeavors. While all sorts of ideas were kicked around, most never assumed that Godzilla would square off against the likes of King Kong. Sure, we have Ishiro Honda’s 1962 flick King Kong vs. Godzilla to scratch that itch, but it’s certainly time for the pair to meet up on the big screen once again. The time for dreaming could be over.

According to Deadline, Legendary Pictures is moving its upcoming endeavor Skull Island over to Warner Bros., which means there’s a chance the two titans could meet on the field of battle in the near future. Did you hear that? I just squealed in delight. Hope I didn’t hurt your ears.

Here’s the scoop straight from Deadline’s Mike Fleming, Jr.:

In what would be a pretty epic pairing, the Godzilla sequel that is in the works will be followed by a movie that pits the giant ape versus the giant fire-breathing reptile. I’m told this is happening very quickly with moves going all the way to Japan, where Godzilla rights holder Toho is based. Legendary, which moved from Warner Bros. to Universal, had developed the Skull Island film at the latter studio. It is unclear at the moment what Universal’s position will be, but I heard the studio move is being done because it is just easier to have all the pieces under one roof, something that Marvel Studios has done with superheroes like The Hulk.

I’m trying not to get my hopes up too much about the project. After all, this is Hollywood, and extremely cool ideas can fall apart at the drop of a hat. Still, it’s exciting to know there’s a chance Godzilla and King Kong will knock each other around on the big screen very soon.
