New Live-Action Death Note Movie Announced with Teaser
A countdown timer on Warner Bros.’ website for the live-action Death Note films has ended with the announcement of a new installment along with a teaser.
Described as a “forbidden sequel” to the three previous films, it will follow Detective L, a popular character from the manga, as he tries to prevent the six Death Notes, which are notebooks created by the Shinigami (Gods of Death), from falling into the wrong hands. Anyone who has his or her name written in them will die soon after, but only six can exist on Earth at a time.
Thanks to Anime News Network, we have a translation of the text and dialogue in the teaser:
Text: 10 years later… the Shinigami land again on Earth
Text: The latest movie, a forbidden sequel
Text: Directed by Shinsuke Sato (Gantz, Library Wars)
Voice and Text: The 6-Note Rule… Note’s Seal… L’s Successor… God of a New World… Consommé Flavor… The Second True Kira… Cyber-terrorism… Light Yagami, Returns
Text: Set to open in 2016
Other details are scarce, other than that it will shoot outside of Japan. Director Shinsuke Sato is also working on a live-action adaptation of the zombie manga I Am a Hero.
The original manga was written by Tsugumi Ohba and drawn by Takeshi Obata (which is strange as manga is usually written and drawn by the same person) and has sold over twenty million copies. It centres on Light Yagami, a bored high school kid who tries to play God by using one of the Death Notes to destroy all evil. But you know what they say: “Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
