In the upcoming four-part series Spawn: The Satan Saga Wars, everyone’s favorite mercenary turned necroplasm-infused superhero will finally, for the first time since the series debuted 23 years ago, face of against the Devil. Satan himself. The Prince of Darkness. The ultimate big bad.

For many years. readers assumed that Malebolgia, who was initially the primary antagonist, was in fact the Biblical Devil. But recently we’ve learned that he was simply the ruler of the Eight Circle of Hell and a high-ranking official in the demon hierarchy, rather than actually being the big man himself.

Satan was introduced in Issue #158, in June 2006, as being the absolute ruler of Hell. In the series he triggers a war between his demon army and the angelic forces of his brother, God, leaving the Earth in ruins; but Spawn, who has been granted divine powers, traps both God and Satan in the ruined world, where they will continue their endless battles whilst also building a new world for mankind, with their knowledge of the Armageddon intact. Yeah, the series does get weird at times, but it’s a lot more simple and entertaining if you read it. Honest. It was actually the series that started my lifelong obsession with comic books when I was a kid.

In The Satan Saga Wars, Satan somehow manages to escape from his prison of what was once Eart, and seeks to restore his former glory. Guess it’s up to Al Simmons to save the day again. Despite being in conflict, the two have never actually fought or even met throughout the series. Series creator Todd MacFarlane returns to write and draw the miniseries that we’ve always been waiting for.

Spawn: The Satan Saga Wars begins in Issue #259, going on sale December 30th.
