Legendary Cancels the Apocalypse; Pacific Rim 2 on Indefinite Hold
We reported just one week ago that Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim 2, originally slated for release in 2017, had run into some problems, which were likely going to push back both the production and the release date. The bad news gets worse today as the sequel may not be happening at all.
In a lengthy article over on The Hollywood Reporter about the relationship between Universal and Warner Bros., allegedly strained in the wake of Legendary’s Kong: Skull Island being moved from the former to the latter, several upcoming releases were discussed, including Pacific Rim 2.
According to the outlet, Legendary wanted to produce a sequel to Pacific Rim, though the high cost of doing so may be preventing it from getting off the ground. Legendary liked that the original performed exceptionally well in China, but for now the project — which was set for release in August 2017 — has been halted indefinitely and will be pushed back (if it gets made at all).
The future of the Pacific Rim franchise, for now at least, is looking pretty bleak. But we’ve learned to NEVER say never.
