Interracial couple Betty and Barney Hill claim to have been abducted and subsequently experimented on by aliens on September 19, 1961. Whether you believe them or not, the story’s about to get a lot more well known as it’s being turned into a movie.

Betty’s niece wrote the 2007 book Captured! The Betty and Barney Hill UFO Experience: The True Story of the World’s First Documented Alien Abduction, which will serve as the basis. Dark Skies creator and UFO expert Bryce Zabel will provide the screenplay and hopes that the film will raise awareness to the social-political aspects of the time period in addition to the alien angle:

“Betty and Barney were two down-to-earth people who found themselves in a situation that was literally out-of-this-world. Ironically, at the time of their abduction, while the country was focused on deeply divided racial issues, it seems like only the aliens never reacted to the color of their skin.”

The production will be a collaboration between Zabel’s Stellar Productions and Gotham/Principal, with Eric Robertson producing on their behalf. He also feels that this is a story that needs to be told:

“Captured is a true story that explores the birth of modern UFO lore through the eyes of the first Americans to report that they were kidnapped by aliens. This is an exciting story that is as intriguing, timely, and ripe for adaptation today as it was 54 years ago when this incident occurred. We look forward to sharing Betty and Barney Hill’s incredible encounter with audiences all around the world.”

But most importantly of all, regardless of whether the story’s true or not, CEO Jackie Zabel explains that the film will be “phenomenal”:

“The Hills were very much a part of the times they lived in. They were an interracial couple in a country that still had segregation laws, and they lived in a city that was next door to a bomber base bristling with nuclear weapons. What they knew and why they were targeted will make for a phenomenal film.”

Both the Hills are now long dead, Barney in 1969 and Betty in 2004. Over the years their story has received much skepticism, but with the universe being as big as it is, the confirmation of the existence of aliens is bound to happen sooner or later.
