Pacific Rim fans were understandably bummed when Guillermo del Toro’s sequel disappeared from the Legendary release schedule. Many assumed the worst — Pacific Rim 2 wasn’t happening after all. In its place, Universal Pictures scheduled Pitch Perfect 3, a franchise that seems to have plenty of box office power at the moment. Things were definitely looking pretty grim.

However, things aren’t as bleak as we initially believed. According to Coming Soon, Universal recently released a statement that explains what’s going on with del Toro’s Pacific Rim sequel. Pitch Perfect 3 may have its original release date, but the flick is apparently still happening. Rejoice!

Here’s what Universal had to say about the follow-up:

Legendary’s Pacific Rim 2, originally scheduled for release on August 4, 2017, will be redated at a later time. The filmmakers, Legendary and Universal Pictures are committed to having Pacific Rim 2, the sequel to 2013’s Pacific Rim, which generated more $411 million at the global box office, be the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves. To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of Pacific Rim 2 so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.

Although we don’t know when, exactly, Pacific Rim 2 will officially invade theaters, at least we know Guillermo del Toro’s sequel is still happening. That’s certainly good enough for now.
