The Final Destination Remains the Destination of Choice for Filmgoers

Labor Day Weekend Box Office EstimatesThe estimated four-day Labor Day weekend box office numbers are in, and they paint a somewhat surprising picture for the latest genre offerings. 3D is still obviously high on everyone’s end-of-summer fun-o-meter, as are prawns — and not just the kind you throw on the barbie.

As usual, the info comes straight from Box Office Mojo, who reports another weekend win for FD4, a respectable opening for the stylized, gloriously gory Gamer, and a steady decline for H2. However, the most telling (and encouraging) number to us is “9”, as in District 9 holding strong with $9 million. A quality project is being supported by the fans — and their hard-earned cash. Finally something to cheer about.

Here are the results:

1. The Final Destination (review) – $15,445,000 (-43.6%) in 3,121 theatres ($4,949 per screen)

In 2nd and 3rd were Inglourious Basterds and All About Steve, respectively. As mentioned above, it’s in the 4th, 5th, and 6th slots where things get really interesting.

4. Gamer (review) – $11,200,000 in 2,502 theatres ($4,476 per screen)
5. District 9 (review) – $9,000,000 (-12.4%) in 3,139 theatres ($2,867 per screen)
6. Halloween II (review) – $7,074,000 (-56.7%) in 3,088 theatres ($2,291 per screen)

Numbers don’t lie.
