New Game Bedlam Pays Homage to Retro Gaming

After the success of The Witcher series, it seems we have the next great video game based on a novel. Beldam is adapted from Christopher Brookmyre’s 2013 book of the same name and follows Heather, a medical scientist who finds herself sucked into the world of Starfire, a Doom style 1990s FPS, and her efforts to escape only lead to her finding herself in more and more bizarre game worlds, including fantasy RPGs and military shooters.

So it’s a bit like Tron and Sword Art Online, only with a bit more blood. And swearing. And other M-rated stuff.

As you would probably have figured out from the plot, Brookmyre is a lifelong gamer and hopes that his passion is represented by the game: “As a lifelong gamer, Bedlam is the love letter to gaming I’ve always wanted to write, and the team at RedBedlam have done an astonishing job bringing my ‘gameverse’ to life,” said Christopher Brookmyre. “It’s a great feeling to know that gamers can now explore the world of Bedlam via a totally different medium.

The best part of the trailer below is how it really gives each game world its own unique graphical and art style rather than just making them generic clones.

Bedlam is out now for PC, PS3, and Xbox One for $19.99.
