Third Resident Evil Animated Film Announced

The third Resident Evil CGI film has been announced via a press release, with The Grudge creator and horror icon Takashi Shimizu on board as producer. No plot details were given. What makes this announcement particularly strange is that the movie will be handled by Marza Animation Planet, an animation company owned by Sega, who are longtime rivals to Capcom and even created the House of the Dead series to rival Resident Evil.

Seems odd that Capcom would choose them to helm the film, but whatever. They also worked on the magnificent Space Pirate: Captain Harlock movie so they do seem like a good choice for Resident Evil.

They’ve got some other established talents on board, too: Makoto Fukam, writer of the Psycho-Pass anime series, will provide the screenplay, and directorial duties will go to Takanori Tsujimoto, known for Revenge Milly – The Beginning and Ultraman X. The movie will be linked to the live-action Resident Evil series by Capcom producer Hiroyuki Kobayash, who worked on both.

The first Resident Evil animated film, 2008’s Degeneration, was pretty awful, mainly because it tried to be some kind of political/romantic drama which just happened to have some horror elements thrown in. I mean, who the hell wants to see a Resident Evil animated film where people just sit around and talk about crap all the time? 2012’s Damnation was a hell of a lot better because it recognized itself for what it was, which was a big dumb action movie. Let’s hope #3 follows Damnation’s example.
