While many filmmakers who start out making horror movies eventually move away from them, we’re very lucky to still have Joe Dante playing around in the genre. Recent efforts like The Hole and Burying the Ex show he’s still got it, and up next he heads into supernatural thriller territory.

As reported by Variety, Dante will direct Labirintus for Goldcrest Films, who will be co-producing, financing, and distributing. They’ll be launching the feature film project at the American Film Market, and production is expected to begin next spring. News on casting will follow.

Labirintus tells the story of a paranormal investigator and psychiatric researcher, who join forces to explore an abandoned subterranean Soviet research facility, hidden within Hungary’s Budapest Labyrinth, the dark twisting catacombs beneath Buda Castle. When supernatural forces confound and torment the group, they begin to question their own sanity. To escape, they must squash their fears and lead their team to find and destroy the dark heart of the maze.

Extraordinary to be working with Joe Dante – a director who has been thrilling, surprising, and scaring audiences his entire career,” said Pascal Degove, managing director at Goldcrest Films. “Labirintus is a creepy and unnerving journey into the psyche, and Joe is the perfect director to bring that to the big screen.”

The thriller is produced by Fabrice Lambot of France’s Metaluna Productions, Lucy Mukerjee-Brown of Mukerjee-Brown Productions, Elizabeth Stanley of Elizabeth Stanley Pictures, and Jean-Charles Levy of Forecast Pictures. Nick Quested and Pascal Degove will serve as executive producers for Goldcrest.
