Muschiettis Producing Supernatural Thriller In Shadows; Update on Stephen King’s IT
Sibling duo Barbara and Andy Muschietti made quite a splash with debut feature Mama, based on their same-named short film from a few years prior. On tap today is the latest on a couple upcoming projects they’re juggling, including an update on the re-adaptation of Stephen King’s IT.
Per Variety, the Muschietti siblings will team with Russell Ackerman and John Schoenfelder to produce supernatural thriller In Shadows, being directed by brothers Alex and David Pastor (The Last Days, Carriers).
The film centers on Jason, a man who comes out of prison after serving 20 years for an unspeakable crime and is forced to confront the terrible events of his past that sent him there.
“Shadows is a twisted coming-of-age story, a dark tale where supernatural horror is a manifestation of the most mundane horror the characters face in their daily lives. Unfolding along two different timelines, the movie explores how the horrors of the past can haunt us all our lives and define us as adults,” David Pastor explained.
“We wrote the kind of genre movie that as audience members we long to see: a character-driven horror film that is as scary as it is emotional, a supernatural tale that uses its fantastical elements to explore the darkest impulses of its characters,” Alex Pastor added.
As we learned earlier this year, Andy Muschietti is replacing Cary Fukunaga as director of a two-part feature adaptation of Stephen King’s IT, and Variety reports that shooting on the first part is expected to begin next summer. Casting is under way, and Will Poulter may remain as Pennywise.
“King described 50s’ terror iconography. And I feel there’s a whole world now to rediscover, to update. There won’t be mummies, werewolves. Terrors are going to be a lot more surprising,” Andy noted.
