Filmmaker Hideo Nakata is most known for bringing horror movies like the original versions of Ring and Dark Water into our nightmares, but back in 2000 he also directed a sexually-charged thriller titled Chaos. The film is now on the remake chopping block, and we’ve got the scoop today.

Per Variety, the Japanese genre master’s Chaos is his latest film to get the remake treatment, and the French production will be helmed by Jalil Lespert (Yves Saint Laurent). She’ll reteam with producer Wassim Beji on the project, being distributed by Universal Pictures in France.

The makeover will topline French stars Romain Duris, Charlotte Lebon, and Lespert. The producer describes the film as a psychological thriller in the spirit of Gone Girl but with a strong sexual tension and says it will retain the narrative thread of the original but add new twists to the mix.

In Chaos a man gets involved in a kidnapping scheme with the wife of a wealthy businessman. She lets herself be tied up and confined in his house while he sends the ransom demand. When he returns home that night, however, he finds her lying dead on the floor. In a panic, he buries her body in the woods and tries to return to his ordinary life. One day he thinks he spots her walking down the street. Is his mind playing tricks on him, or has she somehow returned from the grave?

Filming is expected to begin in France on January 18th of next year.

Beji, who is producing the film via his banner WY Prods., has tapped Australian scribe Andrew Bovell (A Most Wanted Man) to pen the adaptation. Roy Lee is exec producing.
