The holiday shopping season is officially upon us like a zombie on a chubby victim, and that means it’s time once again to take a look back at the last year of Blu-ray releases! Which releases will have the horror fans on your lists giddy like Leatherface with a shiny new chainsaw? Which should you avoid like a scorching case of herpes? Read on to find out!

With the Xbox One, the PlayStation 4, the PlayStation 3, and really cheap standalone players all Blu-ray ready, there’s never been a better time to make that jump into high definition. If you’ve been holding out, throw caution to the wind, kids! Blu is where it’s at! If you already own the DVD of your favorite flick, is there a need to replace it with a Blu-ray? Before we get into the picks, let’s take a second to explain how each is rated. They’re broken down into three categories:

Can’t Miss — Must Haves: These are the cream of the crop! The purchases that are guaranteed to bring a smile to someone’s face. Items no one with the tech should be without.

Good Buys: A rock-solid purchase. Sure, there’s nothing really to die for about these Blu-rays, but be confident in the fact that you’re spending your cash on the goods that you’re hoping for.

Serious Hi-Def Junkies Only: Here’s where things get a bit sketchy. These Blu-rays were included for a few reasons — Either the movies suck, the transfer and sound aren’t up to snuff, or the included supplemental material (or lack thereof) don’t do much to keep these ships afloat.
