The Horrors of the 2016 Golden Globe Nominations Include Mad Max, Jamie Lee Curtis, and… Lady Gaga?
The nominations for the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards were announced early this morning, and the horror nominees are few and far between; however, those that did make the cut are shining examples of the genre at its best… with a few notable exceptions.
On the film side, Mad Max: Fury Road received a nomination for Best Motion Picture – Drama, and its director, George Miller, garnered a nod as well. In somewhat of a surprise, Alicia Vikander was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture for Ex Machina.
And that’s it for the movies unless you include The Revenant, a man vs. nature saga, which racked up four nominations for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for Leonardo DiCaprio, Best Director – Motion Picture for Alejandro González Iñárritu, and Best Original Score – Motion Picture.
Moving to the TV side, here’s where things get “interesting.” Two well-deserved nominations went to Jamie Lee Curtis in “Scream Queens” for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy (she truly was the best thing about that show) and Eva Green in “Penny Dreadful” for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama. As for horror-ish shows, “Game of Thrones” is in the Best Television Series – Drama category.
As for the other TV nods, I think most of us have agreed that this season of “American Horror Story: Hotel” has been one of the show’s weakest; yet, there it is in the Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television category (not to worry, though; if there’s any justice in this world, “Fargo” is sure to win). As if that’s not bad enough, up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television is Lady Gaga. Now, I’m not saying she’s been terrible, but award-worthy? Not hardly!
In any event, that’s it for the horror crowd. For the full list of nominees, visit GoldenGlobes.com, and be sure to watch the live show on January 10, 2016, on NBC to see if your choices match those of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
