Pacific Rim 2 Taken Off Legendary’s Release Schedule

Though Guillermo del Toro recently noted that he turned in the script and budget for Pacific Rim 2, the fate of the project has nevertheless been up in the air for quite some time now. The sequel was originally slated for release on August 4, 2017, but today brings a depressing update.

Per THR, Legendary Pictures has apparently taken Pacific Rim 2 off its release schedule, and the site’s sources indicate that though it was initially done for the purpose of more development, the film is now off the table completely. Del Toro’s next will likely be a remake of 1966’s Fantastic Voyage.

That said, Legendary is soon going to be acquired by Chinese conglomerate Wanda, which provides some hope for the future of the Kaiju franchise. Pacific Rim did big business in China, more than anywhere else in the world, so Wanda will likely be eager to turn on that green light.

But for now, Pacific Rim 2 is dead in the water.
