Swedish Horror Flick Draug Explores the Undead of Norse Mythology
According to Norse mythology, a Draug is a human being brought back to the world of the living through a curse or some other nefarious means. Not only do they have an insatiable appetite for human flesh, legend has it that they drive their victims insane before settling down for a meal. They’re also rumored to smell pretty bad, but that’s getting a little personal if you ask me.
Filmmakers Karin Engman and Klas Persson, who are responsible for creating the web series “The Great Dying,” are using this undead menace of yore as the centerpiece of their upcoming horror film, the aptly-titled Draug. Production on the movie should begin later this year. Draug stars Elna Karlsson, Josefin Nygren, Henrik Edlund, Andreas Helsing, and Mia Hed.
We’ve got a while until its release, but judging from the sizzle reel embedded below, it could be worth the wait.
Synopsis
Sweden, 11th century. A missionary has gone missing inside Ödmården, a huge forest that divides the north from the south. The king sends out a rescue party to either retrieve him alive or kill the insurgents responsible for his death. Among the soldiers is Nanna, a young woman on her first mission. Orphaned at a young age, she has been raised by the king’s guard and is now for the first time traveling to her birth home, the still pagan areas north of Ödmården.
Torn by her allegiance between her new and old worlds, she finds out, as they travel farther and farther into the forest, that there is something else with them in there.
