This year’s Oscar nominees were announced today, and both horror and people of color were left out in the cold.  A couple of horror-ish films did make the cut, though, and we have those details here.  But first… a bit of clarification has come from nominated director George Miller regarding recent reports that he was done with the Mad Max franchise.

While talking with EW about his nomination, Miller stated, “All I said was it won’t be the film I do next.  I’d like to do something smaller, quick — before I go back to the wasteland.” Miller added that he’s working on two scripts, but for now he’s just interested in celebrating. “From here to the Oscars, we party,” he said.

Now, back to the nominations, Mad Max: Fury Road landed a whopping 10, bested only by The Revenant, which has 12.  Max‘s nods include the previously mentioned Miller for Best Director, Best Picture, cinematography, costume design, film editing, sound editing, sound mixing, makeup and hairstyling, production design, and visual effects.

Aside from The Revenant, a man vs. nature survival tale, the only other genre nominee is Ex Machina, which was recognized for its visual effects and original screenplay.

The 88th Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 28, 2016, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood and will be televised live by ABC at 7PM ET/4PM PT. For the full list of nominees, visit oscar.go.com.
