TV Adaptation of A Discovery of Witches Being Developed
The universe created by Deborah Harkness’ trilogy of books that began back in 2011 with A Discovery of Witches has been described as “equal parts history and magic, romance and suspense,” and now a TV version is on its way. Per Deadline, Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner’s UK/US Bad Wolf production shingle has acquired the television rights and is developing a drama based on the book with a view to adapting all three in the series.
Ashley Pharoah (“Life on Mars”) is adapting the novel for the screen while Harkness will also pen several episodes. The exec producers include Tranter, Gardner, Harkness, and Pharoah.
Harkness previously was in development with the BBC, but the project is no longer at the broadcaster and is being shopped. Warner Bros. acquired film rights in 2011, although there has been little movement the past few years. Bad Wolf has only the TV rights.
Synopsis:
In this tale of passion and obsession, Diana Bishop, a young scholar and a descendant of witches, discovers a long-lost and enchanted alchemical manuscript, Ashmole 782, deep in Oxford’s Bodleian Library. Its reappearance summons a fantastical underworld, which she navigates with her leading man, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont.
