Kong: Skull Island Direction Revealed; First in Kaiju Trilogy
Speculation has run rampant regarding just how and where Kong: Skull Island fits in the hierarchy of the franchise, and today news has come that clarifies things a bit.
According to Gormaru Island via Saigon Giai Phong, media representative of the Skull Island crew, Gregg Brilliant (Unit Publicist for Kong: Skull Island), brushed away confusion surrounding the film. Confirming that Kong: Skull Island is not a sequel of any kind, nor a remake of any kind, to any previous King Kong movie. It’s its own unique Kong movie.
Brilliant later informs us that Kong: Skull Island is the next installment of the new kaiju trilogy, with the film being the stepping stone that bridges into Godzilla 2 (2018) and later into the finale of Godzilla vs. King Kong (2020).
Tom Hiddleston, Will Brittain, Brie Larson, John Goodman, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Wilkinson, John C. Reilly, Toby Kebbell, Thomas Mann, Jason Mitchell, Corey Hawkins, John Ortiz, Eugene Cordero, and Shea Whigham star.
Jordan Vogt-Roberts directs from a script by John Gatins and Max Borenstein. Producing are Legendary’s John Jashni and Thomas Tull as well as Mary Parent.
The film is about a man (Hiddleston) who travels to the mythical island and home of the king of the apes. A team of explorers venture inside what they find to be a treacherous island. The story is said to honor the King Kong lore but in a different time period.
Kong: Skull Island will hit theaters on March 10, 2017.
