Peel Back the Layers of Fear

And for a moment there, I thought the age of really cool press kits was dead. A few days ago, I awoke from my pile of laundry and tissues in the corner of the Dread Central office to find a most peculiar package at my door. Plain brown box, gold latches, and small splatters of paint on the side. Whatever could this be? Curiosity thoroughly roused, I snapped the clasps open, and beheld the wonders inside. Layers of Fear, you have outdone yourself.

Beneath a quick press statement and download code (not pictured), a menagerie of macabre memorabilia sat among broken glass, mousetraps, and a razor blade. No, really. There were actual dangerous traps in the box. I’m not sure if the people over at Bloober team meant for the glass to be broken upon arrival, but for an emergent artistic experience, it fits. So, either a hearty congratulations on your dedication to your craft, or happy serendipitous shattering.

I’ve included a gallery below of all the cool stuff in the kit. For an independent digital title, I am floored that this even exists. Major studios hardly ever even spring for paper to wrap what they send me anymore. It’s sadly poetic that a game with no physical copies would create such beautiful tangible objects, all for the purpose of my internet-points. And no, I’m not reading too much into this. This is ART, dammit!

Layers of Fear

Pretty badass, right? The game is available now for download on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. For $20, it’s well worth the cost of admission. If you want to see what I thought, check back soon for my review.
