The Great Wall Delayed to February 2017

Despite being a huge $135 million budget film, the Chinese/Hollywood co-production The Great Wall has been kept so low profile and under the radar that many probably doubt its existence. It comes from House of Flying Daggers and Hero director Zhang Yimou and follows an alternate version of history where the Great Wall of China was built to keep giant monsters at bay.

In addition to a well-known Chinese cast including Andy Lau, Jing Tian, and Zhang Hany on board, it also stars top Hollywood talent in the form of Matt Damon and Willem Dafoe plus Pedro Pascal from “Narcos” and “Game of Thrones” so it should appeal to multiple markets.

It’s been delayed from November 23, 2016, to February 17, 2017, which should give Legendary and Universal some more desperately needed time to market the hell out of it. Comparisons to 47 Ronin are inevitable, and as that was a major bomb ($151 million on a budget of $225), Universal really needs to learn from its mistakes and build up the hype for The Great Wall before it’s too late.
