Weekend Box Office: Gods of Egypt No Match for Deadpool

Our first big-budget flop of 2016 has arrived, ladies and gentlemen… Gods of Egypt (review) managed to recoup just 10% of its $140 million budget with an opening weekend box office take of $14 million.  It was good enough to land the film in second place, but it was a distant second to three-peat b.o. champ Deadpool, which raked in an additional $31.5 million (per Box Office Mojo) for an estimated cumulative total so far of $285,639,009.

And how did critical darling The Witch (review) fare in its second week? It’s still in the Top 10 in eighth place with a little over $5 million (a drop of only 43.1%), bringing its total to an impressive $16,618,191. Also, The Boy (review) – remember that one? – is hanging on in 17th place with a total of approx. $34.5 million over six weeks (vs. a budget of just $10 million) so overall it’s a success as well. And The 5th Wave is still in the Top 20, too, at #18 with a six-week cume of $33,094,802. Unlike The Boy, however, it hasn’t topped its budget ($38 million) so we don’t suspect a 6th Wave will be arriving anytime soon.

What do genre fans have to look forward to? The Wave crashes in next weekend, but for those holding out for something a bit more on the pure horror side of the fence, on March 11th we have 10 Cloverfield Lane, followed by Amityville: The Awakening on April 1st.

Stay tuned…
