Digital Artist Butcher Billy Pays Tribute to David Bowie With Amazing Artwork
David Bowie’s sudden passing had a profound effect on many people around the world, including digital artist and pop-culture fiend Butcher Billy. This guy’s work is top-notch, as shown by his transformation of Cure songs into horror movies and comic books. When Bowie passed away unexpectedly earlier this year, the artist decided to pay tribute to him with 30 different mind-blowing illustrations, which he released one day at a time. It’s a fantastic collection.
“Bowie has always had a huge impact on me. His influence can be seen in tons of my art. In the wake of his death, I was surprised to learn how many people have been affected by his sound and vision, just as I have. This series is to celebrate his life and immense influence,” Butcher Billy explained in a statement.
The GIF below features every single piece of David Bowie-inspired artwork Butcher Billy created for this project. Included in the mix are several nods to horror movies, comic books, fashion icons, and the King of Pop himself. It’s damn-near brilliant, and it reflects how much of an influence Bowie was on artists from every medium. Seeing as how I was a huge Nine Inch Nails nerd as a teenager, Billy’s take on “I’m Afraid of Americans” is definitely my favorite.
Check out the GIF and see if you can spot all the references. They go by pretty fast, so don’t be afraid to refresh the page. I’ve also included some of the single pieces that are more genre-oriented, but truthfully, they’re all spectacular. You can check out the entire collection (and buy some prints) by taking a trip to Butcher Billy’s Curioos page.
